What is a Doula?
The word "Doula" is derived from ancient Greek, meaning "service." The term has evolved and is now used to refer to a person who provides continuous support and accompaniment to women during the processes of infertility, pregnancy, childbirth, grief, parenting, adoption, motherhood, and postpartum.
It is an old art that is being rescued and adapted to the modern concept of childbirth in different settings, such as private practice, hospital practice, and communities. Ancestral traditions that unite women in their labor and childcare are valued.
Families work with their "Doula" beforehand, getting to know each other, in order to generate a bond leading up to the birth. They talk about fears, desires, and possibilities for adequate support tailored to their needs. The doula not only supports the woman, but also provides support to their emotional companions (partner, parents, siblings, etc.), working as a team in the care provided to the mother in labor and promoting the active participation of emotional companions.
